A garden is the best alternative therapy.

***** UPDATE:  Many thanks to RBell of A Lazy Shady Gardener here in Austin, Texas for identifying the bug as the dreaded squash vine borer moth!  It will die the next time I see it.  🙂 *****

This is a new one for me.  I found this insect in the garden yesterday, but can’t seem to identify it.  I don’t know if it is friend or foe.  It didn’t seem to be doing any damage.  I thought someone out there might be able to identify it.  The first one to identify it gets public recognition and a sincere thanks.  🙂

  1. Pretty sure its a moth in the genus Melittia (Borer moths); not sure of the specific species. Here’s one species: http://bugguide.net/node/view/220589

Grrrrreat. I think you’re right. And with zucchini and squash in the yard, I’m sure it is here for a reason. Now I’ll know what to look for! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the help in identifying this harmful pest!
